Rosstat’s latest report shows impressive production for pulses, particularly peas, in 2022. Despite this and the potential for exports to China, AgPulse Analytica doesn’t expect acreages to increase.
Reporting on the country’s 2022 crop production, Rosstat, Russia's official statistic agency, indicated record levels for many field crops, including cereals, pulses and oilseeds. The total production of cereals and pulse crops is reported at 157.68 MMT for 2022, up by a whopping 30% on the previous year.
Rosstat reported the total pulses production at 4.56 MMT in 2022, which is an increase of 19% on 2021.
According to the report, Russian peas production in 2022 was 3.62 MMT in 2022, compared to 3.17 MMT in 2021. Additionally, the 2022 pea production is 30.4% higher than the five-year average production (2017-2021). Pea volumes in Russia have been steadily increasing since 2018.
At AgPulse, we had put the production forecast at 3.75 MMT since June but, with the latest update from the official agency, we will push it slightly down to 3.65 MMT.
The increase in pea production came from all Federal Districts except Southern and North Caucasus.
The total pea acreage in 2022 was 1.616 million hectares, up by 13% from 2021.
Despite production drops in the Southern and North Caucasus districts, both areas actually showed an increase in acreage.
Russian pea acreages are unlikely to increase this year, despite a highly probable trade opening with China. The pea offtake during MY 2022/23 remained poor for the export market and we expect Russian farmers to be holding a large inventory at the end of the current marketing year.
