With the harvest nearly complete, zero duty imports until March 2026 and a six-year plan for self-sufficiency promise significant shifts. Ankita Parekh, Head of Global Research, Pulses & Specialty Crops at ETG discusses the outlook.
The Indian pigeon peas (tur) harvest is nearly complete, and arrivals of the new crop have been steadily increasing over the past two weeks. To ensure ample domestic supply, the government has extended duty-free imports until March 31, 2026. In addition, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in the Union Budget 2025-26, announced the launch of a six-year "Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses", aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in pulse production.
