Navneet Chhabra of Global Garbanzo and Dario Bard of the GPC spoke with Carlos Carias of The Redwood Group to get the lowdown on the US 2023 kabuli chickpea crop.
The USDA’s October 12 Crop Production report pegs US kabuli chickpea production at 224,890 MT in 2023, a nearly 36% increase on the year off of an average yield of 1.49 MT/ha., up 24% compared to 2022.
These numbers, says Carlos Carias, indicate US chickpea production is bouncing back from the drought of 2021 (see U.S. Drought Monitor). But although they represent significant improvement, the volume and yields of this year’s crop still fall shy of pre-2021 levels.
“Before the drought of 2021, the average yield on chickpeas was 25-26 bu/acre,” notes Carlos. “That fell to 13 bu/acre in 2021 because of the drought. Since then, we have been recovering. In 2022, we averaged 18 bu/acre and this year we are up to 22 bu/acre, almost back to where we were before.”
In terms of quality, Carlos reports that this year’s crop is superior to last year’s; the only issue lies with the caliber-size distribution.
