As the Green Mung Bean (GMB) season approaches, here’s an overview of the upcoming harvest, production trends, and market outlook.
Green mung beans make a brilliant base for unique desserts like the healthy, creamy, high-protein ice pops which are popular in Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam, the Philippines, and Thailand.
Tanzania has a single GMB harvest each year, with planting typically commencing in November and harvesting occurring in January. For the current season, preliminary estimates indicate a crop size of approximately 40,000 tons, explains pulse trader Fahad Nahdi from SM Holdings. This figure is subject to change as it is based on initial assessments. The harvest in Northern Tanzania is expected to begin at the end of January, followed closely by the Southern harvest.
