Something unusual has surfaced in Pakistan’s kabuli chickpea trade: an uncharacteristic rise in imports during the first quarter of the year. It’s not necessarily a red flag, but the numbers are striking enough to prompt questions about what’s driving buyer behavior.
From diverted cargo to price-driven buys, a mix of factors has been quietly reshaping Pakistan’s kabuli import volumes—catching the attention of global traders.
From January to April 2025, Pakistan’s kabuli chickpea imports averaged 24,000 metric tons per month, almost 85% higher than the typical 13,000 tons per month seen over the same period between 2021 and 2024. The increase, while not unprecedented in absolute terms, stands out as a clear outlier in recent trends.
So what’s driving this deviation? Are we witnessing the start of a new import cycle—or just a temporary shift caused by a mix of global supply, pricing, and policy expectations?
