Historically, Russia has not been a significant player in the international lentil market. Until 2017, the country's lentil production consistently stayed below 100 KMT, according to FAO data. However, there has been a noticeable increase in both land dedicated to lentil cultivation and overall output since then. 

Global demand for pulses, particularly driven by the Indian subcontinent, soared between 2014 and 2017, leading to a nearly sevenfold increase in Russian lentil acreage—from 31 thousand hectares in 2015 to 248 thousand hectares by 2018. Although India did not initially purchase Russian lentils, other countries such as Turkey, Pakistan, UAE, and Iran began importing them, boosting Russian exports.
