India maintains its position as the world's leading producer, consumer, and importer of pigeon peas, locally known as tur or arhar. This traditional Kharif crop, typically sown between June and August and harvested from October to November, plays a crucial role in India's agricultural landscape.

Production Trends and Acreage

Through the biggest MSP hike in percentage terms in the past seven years, India's policymakers successfully incentivized farmers to expand pigeon pea acreage this season, with the agricultural community responding positively to the call. As of September 13, 2024, Indian farmers had planted the crop across more than 4.7 million hectares. While the key producing states of Karnataka and Maharashtra have seen increases in tur acreage, other states (with the exception of Madhya Pradesh) have shown less enthusiasm for the crop this season.
