Sinaloa planted approximately 20,000 ha of pinto beans out of their total 110,000 ha of beans. In total, the production of beans in the region is around 180 KMT, falling short of the initial 200 KMT expectation.

Late seedings have pushed back the harvest 

This year the harvest is unusually late as farmers were still planting later than normal – they were waiting to see if there was enough water to plant corn. Normally, by the second week of March there are almost no beans left to harvest, but we're still seeing some beans harvested this week and possibly next. Because some chickpeas were planted in February, It’s possible some could still need to be harvested in June, which has never happened before!

“It's been quite a unique year in Sinaloa”, explains Sandoval, since water scarcity drove more companies into the bean and chickpea market, creating widespread demand that ultimately drove up bean prices.
