Low Canadian pea and lentil stocks/

  • Supplies of both pulses are at 5-year lows, not including the drought-stricken 2021
  • A lower exportable surplus in Canada means prices will likely stay high and traditional Canadian pea importers will need to look for alternative origins
  • Lentil supplies are also low but global supplies are under less pressure due to a good Australian crop and an estimated record Indian production


Last week, StatsCan released stock data as of December 31, 2022, which revealed poor stock positions for pulses, despite an uptick in production this year. Barring the drought-affected levels of 2021, pea stocks are at their lowest since 2013 while lentil stocks are at the lowest levels since 2015.
