  • “Total pulses production is estimated at just 6.95 MMT, marking the fourth consecutive decline in Kharif production and bringing pulse output to its lowest level since 2015-16.”
  • “Prices remained elevated throughout much of the previous season, and favourable weather conditions during the planting period left farmers with no compelling reason to reduce the allocation of land for tur.”
  • “While the 3.5 MMT estimate is an important benchmark, there is optimism that the final production figures could be reported even higher”

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare released the first advance estimates of Kharif crop production for the year 2024-25, revealing record-breaking foodgrain production. According to the estimates, the total foodgrain production for Kharif crops in 2024-25 is projected at 164.71 million metric tons (MMT), an increase of 8.94 MMT from the previous year’s production. This positive outlook reflects favourable weather conditions and improved agricultural practices that contributed to higher yields across various foodgrain categories.

The primary pulses cultivated during the Kharif season are pigeon peas (tur), moong, and black matpe (urad). Despite the overall rise in foodgrain production, the pulse sector is facing challenges. Total pulses production of Kharif crops in 2024-25 is estimated at just 6.95 MMT. This marks the fourth consecutive decline in Kharif pulse production and brings the pulse output to its lowest level since 2015-16. The declining trend in pulse production is concerning for both farmers and policymakers, as pulses play a critical role in the Indian diet as a key source of protein.
