Kazakh lentils have dramatically emerged as a major force on the global stage, almost doubling production in just one year and winning market share from long-established giants. Here’s how this rapid ascent is reshaping trade flows from the Black Sea to the Middle East.
Kazakhstan’s lentil acreage has surged by 81% in one year, and exports have more than doubled year-on-year, led by Turkey and Italy.
Kazakhstan’s lentil output has surged in recent years, reaching a record 456,000 metric tonnes (KMT) in 2024/25—more than double its 2023/24 total. Buoyed by the access to markets and remunerative prices, Kazakh farmers upped their lentil acreage substantially this season. For the current marketing year, the lentil acreage in the land locked country is 81% higher.
