Gaurav Jain looks at Indian yellow pea imports in 2024 and the outlook for trade once the new crops in key producers are ready to be shipped.
After initially removing the import barriers for yellow peas in late 2023 following a seven year period of closure, India has since extended the free import three times.
The import flow has been tremendous in the meantime and, as per customs data, the country received 1.57 MMT of peas in the first four months of 2024. Canada has been the top origin in these four months, contributing 52% of total imports followed by Russia at 31%, Türkiye at 12% and Ukraine at 1.8%.
