Igrain India reports on the impact on prices of good availability of lentils thanks to a stronger domestic crop and increased imports last season.
Buying of lentils in India remained very low due to sluggish demand. As a result, prices in almost all states were seen trending downwards in the past week. The supply and availability of lentils has increased in the country due to a good domestic crop as well as increased imports last season.
Nearly 0.282 million tonnes of lentils are estimated to have been imported into India from April to July, compared to 0.46 million tonnes during the same period last year. Monthly import volumes were down year-on-year between April and July 2024 as compared to 2023: 64,583 tonnes in April 2024 (66,647 in 2023), 49,095 tonnes in May (61,999 in 2023), 0.102 million tonnes in June 2024 (0.17 million in 2023), 0.168 million tonnes in July 2024 (0.066 in 2023).
