In an update from Igrain India, Rahul Chauhan discusses planting numbers in the South Indian state of Karnataka and the prospect of a much improved Kharif crop.
Bangalore. Great production is expected this season in Karnataka, an important agricultural producing state in South India, due to good sowing of Kharif crops and favorable weather and monsoon conditions.
The sowing of crops including pigeon peas, black matpe, green mung beans and coarse grains was done at the right time due to good rains. The progress of crops is also satisfactory.
According to data from the State Agriculture Department, during the current year the total production area of food grain crops in Karnataka has increased by 0.87 million hectares as compared to last year, topping 7.3 million hectares in 2024. This includes an area of 2.9 million hectares of cereal crops and 2.18 million hectares of pulse crops.
The average five-year production area of food grains in the Kharif season in Karnataka has been estimated at 4.4 million hectares. The Agriculture Department has estimated the production of 9.73 million tons of grains and 1.47 million tons of pulses in the state during the current Kharif season.
Although rains are good in most of the state, waterlogging in the fields of some districts such as Belagavi, Bagalkot, Shivamogga and Haveri was also reported. Farmers who were impacted by last year's drought-affected production are expected to see a reversal of fortunes thanks to the excellent yields expected this year.
This time the monsoon rains have been good and the reservoirs are also full, due to which the production during the Rabi and Zaid seasons is also expected to be better.
