Strong production in North America, rising competition from the Black Sea region and comfortable inventories across key importing countries are creating a well-supplied global green and brown lentils market, with prices expected to remain under pressure despite steady consumption.
Experts at this session described a market defined by abundant supply, particularly in Canada and the United States, where exceptionally large crops and substantial carryover stocks are expected to weigh on prices through the 2026/27 season. While acreage is projected to decline in both countries as growers respond to weaker returns and shift some land to alternative crops, inventories remain large enough to require additional demand from feed, pet food and other non-traditional channels.
Panelists also highlighted the growing influence of the Black Sea region, with Russia strengthening its position as a competitive supplier thanks to logistical advantages and investments in production and processing infrastructure. Turkey continues to play a key role as both an importer and re-export hub, while India remains a steady destination for green lentils despite comfortable domestic stocks and limited expectations for consumption growth. Across the market, participants agreed that demand remains healthy, but that large global supplies and carryover inventories are likely to keep prices relatively flat unless weather-related production issues emerge.
