Dry conditions resulted in below average yields and smaller caliber sizes across all bean classes.
Continuing with its updates on Argentina’s 2020 dry bean harvest, CLERA reports that nearly 100% of the colored bean crop has been harvested.
In general terms, it was observed that, depending on the area and the severity, the varying periods of markedly dry conditions resulted in below average yields and caliber sizes.
In the case of cranberry beans, yields were well below average, significantly reducing the volume relative to what Argentina typically has to offer. The dry conditions also resulted in below average caliber sizes, with calibers of between 220 and 330 grains per 100 grams, depending on the area and the climate conditions. Today, practically no supplies of this bean class remain.
Turning to dark red kidney beans, on average yields were down approximately 30% compared to prior years, and the calibers of the vast majority of the harvested beans is between 260 and 320 grains per 100 grams. The quality is optimal, with good hydration and cooking properties, making the beans ideal for the canning industry, which is their primary market.
In the case of light red kidney beans, the reduction in yields is even greater and the availability of this bean type is very low. In some cases, the caliber sizes are as small as 300 grains per 100 grams.
In the case of both kidney bean types, due to limited supplies, the export availability is practically nil.
With respect to black beans, in addition to the dry conditions that affected most of the growing area, the crop also suffered repeated frost events, which contributed to below average yields and caliber sizes smaller than what Argentina regularly produces. Usually, Argentina’s black beans are 4 mm or bigger, but this year most of the crop is 3.5 mm or even smaller. The final volume is expected to be below initial estimates.
The alubia bean harvest unfolded differently depending on the area and planting date, but to date, with approximately 90% of the area harvested, yields have consistently been 20 to 30% below average. This year, the average yield is estimated at 1,000 kg/ha. of raw material, with small caliber sizes. The overall average caliber size of this year’s crop is 220-230/100, with practically no beans larger than that available. The quality is optimal across the board, with grains that are well-shaped, have good color and good hydration and cooking properties. The quality is key given thatthe exportable supply is 40,000 to 50,000 MT smaller than last year.
A good part of the 2020 alubia bean crop had been pre-sold with caliber specs of 185-190/100, which is not what was harvested. Nonetheless, buyers have understood that this is an exceptional situation and in the face of this reality are accepting smaller caliber sizes.
In a few days, the harvest will be wrapped up and CLERA will provide a new and final evaluation of the situation.
