Dr. Tapasya Jain of AgPulse Analytica explains why farmers may be playing the long game — betting on India, Pakistan, and a fiercely competitive 2025/26 season.
StatsCan’s June report shows a surprising 9% increase in 2025 plantings — a move AgPulse Analytica sees as strategic.
Statistics Canada (StatsCan) recently reported a 9% increase in Canadian pea acreage for 2025, with planted areas reaching approximately 1.42 million hectares in the June 2025 estimate. This unexpected rise, detailed in StatsCan’s June 2025 seeded acreage report, has sparked widespread skepticism in the pulse market, particularly given China’s imposition of a 100% tariff on Canadian pea imports. The tariff has disrupted a major export market, leading many to question why farmers would expand planting under such conditions. At AgPulse, we’re as surprised as the market, but StatsCan’s historical accuracy gives us confidence in these numbers. We’re not expecting revisions and believe the acreage increase reflects a strategic move to capitalize on new opportunities, setting the stage for an aggressive 2025/26 season.
