Australia is set to produce an estimated 1.9 million tons of desi chickpeas this year, according to a report by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. That’s slightly lower than the 2.267 million tons produced in 2024 (as per ABARES) — but still a massive crop by historical standards. The question is: where will it go?
In 2024, India opened its doors to desi chickpea imports due to a short domestic crop, becoming the primary buyer of over 1 million tons from Australia. But as of March 2025, India has imposed a 10% import duty on Australian desi chickpeas — a move that could significantly shift trade patterns.
