AgPulse Analytica’s Gaurav Jain explains how India came to be the top global exporter of pulses flours and why this represents a great opportunity for pulse processors.
Pulses flour is a smaller commodity in global trade compared to whole and milled pulses but, thanks to the growing use of pulses in the alternative proteins industry, it is becoming increasingly popular.
Until 2015, the contribution of pulse flours to global trade was less than 100 thousand MT. Since then, however, the market has experienced exponential growth, with volumes sitting at 217 thousand MT last year.
Major exporters have traditionally been Canada, USA, France, Belgium and India with Canada contributing the major share in global trade until 2018. From 2019 onwards, Indian exporters have been swiftly gaining market share.
India is the biggest consumer, producer, and importer of pulses in the world and has now emerged as the world’s largest supplier of pulses flour. The country’s market share increased from 14% in 2015 to 48% in 2021.
