The allowal of Russian pea exports into China late last year has come at a significant moment. With Russia becoming an important exporter and Canada focusing increasingly on domestic processing, how will this shape the market?
China has always been a key pea importer but in 2017 it emerged as the top destination for peas, as a consequence of India’s restriction of pea imports which left seaborne cargo desperately trying to find a home. Chinese import volumes grew from 1.3 MMT in 2017 to 2.9 MMT in 2020 with the majority of these peas coming from Canada, followed by the USA.
In 2021, severe drought conditions in North America diminished exportable volumes and Chinese feed makers and protein extractors had to look for alternatives, managing only 200 KMT from all other origins in 2022.
