A gamechanger for the pea industry/
Russia may begin exporting to China “as early as next month”

  • Chinese pea import volumes have been growing steadily with the USA and Canada as main export origins. 
  • 2021’s droughts in North America caused Chinese importers to look elsewhere and the government opened imports from Russia in December 2022
  • Russia is emerging as a key pea exporter and in order to meet China’s huge demand, volumes normally destined for the EU, Turkey and South Asia will likely be redirected to the Chinese    

China has always been a key pea importer but in 2017 it emerged as the top destination for peas, as a consequence of India’s restriction of pea imports which left seaborne cargo desperately trying to find a home. Chinese import volumes grew from 1.3 MMT in 2017 to 2.9 MMT in 2020 with the majority of these peas coming from Canada, followed by the USA. 

In 2021, severe drought conditions in North America diminished exportable volumes and Chinese feed makers and protein extractors had to look for alternatives, managing only 200 KMT from all other origins in 2022.
