Brazil is the world’s largest dry bean market and relies primarily on its domestic production to supply its internal market. This is especially the case for carioca beans, the preferred bean of the Brazilian consumer. But in recent years, dry beans have been losing ground to soybeans and corn. Per capita consumption, too, is trending downward. On the other hand, new varieties of slow-darkening carioca beans adapted to lower altitudes are becoming commercially available and production is migrating onto irrigated farmland, where higher yields are sure to be seen.
What does this all mean for the future of the world’s number one dry bean market?
