Brazil Cowpea Beans and Mung Beans Panel

In global pulse trade circles, Brazil is primarily known as a major producer and consumer of carioca and black beans. But since 2005, it has invested in diversifying its dry bean production. Today those investments are paying off; the country produces significant volumes of about 15 different dry bean classes. Domestic dry bean consumption now consists of about 60% carioca beans, 18% cowpeas, 15% black beans and 7% other bean types. Additionally, for more than two decades now, Brazil has established itself as a major exporter of cowpeas and mung beans.

Investments in the area of exports continue as the sector implements traceability and sustainability practices. But 2021 set exports back, as roughly 300,000 MT of dry bean production was lost due to adverse weather, pushing up domestic prices, resulting in food inflation and dampening the export outlook.

Nonetheless, Brazil’s dry bean sector continues to move forward with its ambitious plans to position Brazilian pulses and special crops as high-quality products on the global market.
